Brassard lifts Generals
Generals 5, Royals 2 Staff report Greensboro News & Record – February 27, 2002 READING, Pa. - Team captain Chris Brassard scored his team-leading 21st and 22nd goals of the season, and interim coach Alex Godynyuk got his first victory as the Greensboro Generals, defeated the Reading; Royals 5-2 at the Sovreign Center on Tuesday. Godynyuk is now 1-1-1 since taking over for Graemé Townshend. Trailing 1-0 in the second period, Greensboro tied the game when Alex Matviychuk stole the puck and passed it to Dmitri Markovsky. The pass was behind Markovsky, who spun 360 degrees to collect the puck and get into Reading territory. He blew by defender, made a forehand-backhand deke on the goalie and scored his second goal as a General on a backhander into the open net. Dennis Maxwell finished a give-and-go with Jeff Bes for his first goal as a General to make it 2-1. Brassard scored what held up as the game-winner on a bizarre play to open the third period. He cleared the puck from the defensive zone, and it stopped in a puddle of unfrozen water — the Zamboni had just cleared the ice — 25 feet from the goalie. Brassard skated in and slapped the stationary puck past the goalie. |
