GENERALS HIRE FORMER NHL DEFENSEMAN GODYNYUK AS ASSISTANT COACH
November 15, 2001 The Greensboro Generals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) have announced the hiring of Alex Godynyuk (gah-DIN-yuk) as the team's new assistant coach. Godynyuk will be behind the bench with head coach Graeme Townshend when the Generals host the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies on Friday at 7:30 at the Greensboro Coliseum. Godynyuk, 31, is beginning his new career as a coach, after retiring from an eleven-year playing career just last month. A native of Kiev, Ukraine, he is a veteran of 223 games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Florida Panthers, and Hartford Whalers. He most recently was in Berlin, Germany for the last two years of his playing career. He was invited by the Carolina Hurricanes this season to be an advisor for their first round draft pick Igor Knyazev during training camp. "Alex will be a tremendous addition to our organization," says Townshend. "He'll be able to help me out both on and off the ice. His playing experience speaks for itself, and he'll be able to pass that on to some of our younger guys. I can't wait to stand behind the bench with him." |
