GENERALS ROPE IN A BLUELINER
13 September, 2001 Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Generals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) have announced the signing of rookie defenseman Dion Lassu (lah-SOO) to a contract. The addition of Lassu gives the Generals six players currently signed to contracts. He joins forwards Brian Loney, Chris Bell, Jarrett Thompson and Bobby Hanson, along with goaltender Dan Ragusett. Lassu, 21, played for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season. The 6'2", 215 pound defenseman posted career highs with 21 assists and 24 points in 68 games last season. However, Lassu is most noted for his defensive play and his physical presence, recording 215 penalty minutes last year. In 276 career games in the WHL, the Calgary, Alberta native has notched twelve goals and 49 assists for 61 points, while racking up 822 penalty minutes. Along with Seattle, Lassu played for the Kootenay Ice and the Edmonton Ice at the major junior level. "I'm thrilled about getting Dion signed to a deal," says Generals head coach Graeme Townshend. "There was some tremendous competition in this league to sign him. He's a big, steady defenseman who enjoys throwing bodies around, and he also has some strong offensive instincts. He should make an immediate impact on this team." |
