Serov Named To Ukrainian Olympic Hockey Team
He'll Play For His Country In Salt Lake City
January 24, 2002

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Generals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) are elated to announce that left wing Vlad Serov will be given a leave of absence to participate in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. He will play for his native Ukraine in the preliminary rounds of the ice hockey competition. The opening ceremonies are on February 8.

Serov will play for the Generals through February 2. He will then leave for Salt Lake City on February 3 to begin practicing with the Ukraine Olympic team. Ukraine is in a four team group, with the winner of the group advancing to the final round of the Olympic ice hockey tournament. The other teams in Ukraine's group are Belarus, Switzerland, and France. Ukraine is guaranteed to play in at least four games in the Olympics. The first one kicks off the Olympic hockey schedule with a contest against Belarus on February 9 at 4:00 p.m. EST. They also play Switzerland on February 11 at 6:00 p.m. EST, and France on February 13 at 9:00 p.m. EST. Should Ukraine win the round robin tournament against the other three nations, they will advance to the final round, where they will play four more games. If they do not win their group, Ukraine will play one final game on February 14. Serov will return to the Generals when Ukraine is eliminated from competition.

"I still can't believe I'm going to the Olympics," says Serov. "It's every hockey player's dream. It's a big honor to play for your country in the biggest hockey competition in the world. I would also like to thank (assistant coach) Alex (Godynyuk) and (head coach) Graeme (Townshend) for helping me get this spot by recommending me to the national olympic team."

"We're all thrilled for Vlad," says Townshend. "He's a tireless worker who deserves this spot on the Ukrainian National Team. He should get a lot of exposure to some National Hockey League scouts too, so hopefully someone will take notice of how good a player he is. I know he'll have a tremendous experience there."

The Generals next game is Saturday at 7:30 against the Toledo Storm at the LJVM Coliseum Annex in Winston-Salem. Tickets are available at both the Greensboro Coliseum and LJVM Coliseum Annex Monday - Saturday from 11:00 - 5:00 and through the first period of all game nights. You can also order tickets through the Generals new ticket provider,, by calling toll-free at (888) 397-3100, or go to the link at
